Gov. Andy Beshear has ordered flags at state buildings to half staff in honor of both former Gov. Martha Layne Collins, Kentucky’s first and only woman executive, who died on Saturday at the age of 88, and former Vice President Dick Cheney, who died Wednesday at the age of 84.

Collins was the commonwealth’s 56th governor and held office from 1983 to 1987. She had previously served as lieutenant governor from 1979 to 1983.

“Former Gov. Martha Layne Collins was a powerhouse, transforming our commonwealth through major accomplishments like bringing Toyota to our state for its first U.S. site,” Beshear said in a press release. “She created a foundation for us to build a strong future upon, and her legacy will continue to benefit Kentucky families for generations. Let’s remember to send up a thank you with our prayers as we remember a remarkable leader who made an undeniable difference in our state.”

Cheney was vice president to former President George W. Bush and was in office from 2001 to end of 2008. He was also the White House chief of staff under former President Gerald Ford and the secretary of defense under former President George H.W. Bush.

Beshear did not a issue a statement on Cheney’s passing.

The order will remain in effect until sunset on the day after Collins and Cheney have both been properly buried. Funerary arrangements for them have not yet been publicly announced.

Although it is not required by law, “individuals, businesses and organizations throughout the commonwealth are encouraged to join in this tribute,” wrote the governor’s office.
