Local lawyers and law students were honored at a special luncheon last week in Edgewood for pro bono legal work.
The event took place at the Summit Hills Country Club on Oct. 21 and coincided with National Pro Bono Month. Seven local attorneys and one law student were honored for their work.
“This month reminds us that equal access to justice depends on the generosity and compassion of Kentucky’s legal community,” said Justice Michelle M. Keller of the Supreme Court of Kentucky. “Each of these honorees represents the best of our profession through their dedication to serving others.”
The following people were honored:
- Law Student of the Year: Bailey Akin, student at the Northern Kentucky University Salmon P. Chase College of Law
- Nick of Time Award: Kathleen S. Shields, Law Office of M. Erin Wilkins
- Kenton County Legal Help Center Outstanding Volunteers:
- Edward Burcham
- Jeannine Abukhater Lambert
- Michael J. O’Hara
- Adam M. Russell
- Pro Bono Attorney of the Year: Stefanie Durstock
- Justice for All Award (posthumous): Robert Kim Vocke
The luncheon itself was organized by Northern Kentucky Volunteer Lawyers, Legal Aid of the Bluegrass and the Northern Kentucky Bar Association, and featured an additional celebration of Kentucky’s Legal Help Centers, which help people representing themselves easily access court forms and understanding basic legal processes.
“The dedication of volunteer lawyers and law students strengthens public trust in the justice system,” said Glenda Harrison, executive director of the Kentucky Access to Justice Commission. “We are grateful for the many hours these individuals give to help Kentucky families navigate life-changing legal issues.”
