The 12th Street Bridge, also known as the Girl Scout Bridge, which connects Newport and Covington, has reopened following a closure for emergency repairs on Monday.
“On Monday, Oct. 20, KYTC engineers reviewed a potential issue with a bridge joint. Crews closed the bridge shortly after the engineering review out of an abundance of caution to motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists,” according to a press release from the transportation cabinet. “KYTC District 6 worked quickly to gather the necessary specialized equipment from across the state — including seven hydraulic jacks.”
The equipment arrived Tuesday morning, according to the release. The jacks were used to lift the bridge, literally, to allow for crews to get underneath it to install new bearings. The bridge was closed for about 27 hours, and the reopening comes a full six days ahead of schedule, according to the cabinet.
