After 29 years of service, Florence police captain Greg Rehkamp is retiring. The veteran officer’s departure created two opportunities for promotion from within the department.

At the Oct. 14 Florence City Council business meeting, Florence Mayor Julie Metzger Aubuchon swore in Lt. Mike Geis as Rehkamp’s replacement. Aubuchon also swore in Sgt. Erik Daniels to fill Geis’s lieutenant slot.
Geis has been on the Florence force for more than 17 years.
“He started out in Lexington for a couple of years and then came to us and has moved up the ranks,” Florence Police Chief Jeff Mallery told LINK nky before the brief ceremony.

“Throughout his career, Captain Geis has had the rank of officer, corporal, sergeant, lieutenant,” Mallery told council members. “He served as a field officer, training officer, a member of the SWAT team and was assigned to the criminal investigative unit for several years before returning to patrol unit.”
“Mike Geis is a graduate of the Northwestern University Command School.”
Daniels was a Marine Corps sniper before becoming a Florence police officer.

“Lieutenant Daniels served as a field training officer and as a sergeant, he led the criminal investigative unit for six years,” Mallery said in his statement to the council.
Family members, friends and fellow police officers filled the council chambers to witness the promotions. Greis and Daniels acknowledged them before posing for pictures with the mayor and chief.
“Thank you all for sharing them with us, from your family to ours,” Aubuchon told the family members in the audience.
