Fort Wright City Councilmember Dave Abeln resigned this week.
Abeln joined Fort Wright city council in 2012. He grew up in Fort Wright and has lived in the community for over 50 years.
Abeln is vice president at Metcut Research Inc., and he said his departure at the city was the result of his workplace responsibilities increasing.
“Unfortunately, his professional obligations no longer allow him to continue in his role,” Fort Wright Mayor Dave Hatter said. “Dave [Abeln] has done a phenomenal job. He’s a great guy. This is a huge loss.”

Fort Wright is asking that any candidates who wish to be considered for appointment reach to City Administrator Jill Cain Bailey by 5 pm on Oct. 1, 2025.
Candidates must be at least 18 and have been a resident of Fort Wright for over a year. They should be eligible to vote in Kentucky and intending to stay in Fort Wright through the end of 2026.
Council member Scott Wall, the senior council member, will be leading the search for a new council member.
“Once all the candidates are in, we’ll interview them,” Wall said. “They’ll give a spiel in front of council, and as a group, we will huddle and decide.”
Fort Wright has 30 days from the date of Abeln’s resignation (Sept. 17) to fill that role before the governor has the power to appoint someone at his discretion.
