Thomas More University will officially become a full member of Division II of the NCAA on Sept. 1 after a three-year tenure as a provisional member in the division.

The school announced the upcoming membership change on Thursday.

“This is a historic accomplishment for Thomas More University and Saints Athletics,” said Thomas More University President Joseph Chillo in the announcement. “Over the past three years, the university has been working strategically to elevate its position as the premier regional Catholic university.”

The school first earned provisional membership status in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, or G-MAC, during the 2023-2024 academic year. Before the switch, the school competed in Division III. The provisional membership allowed the school to compete in conference championships and tournaments.

The school has expanded its athletic facilities since it was first granted provisional membership, including the purchase of the Five Season Family Sports Club, the current facility for the tennis team, in 2023. The school has also improved equipment and facilities at its other sports’ complexes and built a new academic center in 2024.

“I am tremendously proud of my administrative team and coaching staff for their efforts throughout this transition,” said Director of Athletics Terry Connor. “Now that we are able to compete at the national level, I am even more excited to cheer on our student-athletes this year and in the years ahead. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish in DII – Go Saints!”
