A collision on the Big Mac Bridge has left one pedestrian dead.

According to the Newport Police Department, on July 6, around 3:40 a.m., a person was hit while helping a disabled driver on I-471 northbound on the bridge.

A vehicle had broken down in the far-right lane, and the person stopped behind it to offer assistance. While pushing the disabled vehicle, a car struck the back of his vehicle, pushing it into him and the vehicle he was assisting, resulting in serious injuries.

Newport Police said in a news release that the pedestrian and a passenger in his car were taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The pedestrian assisting the disabled driver later died from injuries at UC Hospital. The driver of the disabled vehicle was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries. The operator of the striking vehicle was not injured.

The Campbell County Special Investigation Response Team was called to the scene. The Newport Police Department is investigating potential contributing factors and possible criminal charges.
