Roadway safety in the city was a topic of discussion at Highland Heights’ June city council meeting Tuesday night.

Following concerns brought by citizens, temporary speed bumps are being added on Sunset Drive, one of the busiest streets in the city, according to City Administrator Michael Giffen.

Although the speed bumps aren’t permanent, the city is evaluating their effectiveness in reducing the speed of drivers on the road.

Leslie Leopold, a Highland Heights resident who lives on a neighboring street to Sunset Drive, shared her concerns about the speed of drivers on her street and pointed to the lack of speed limit signage.

“I was leaving at the same time as a school bus driver, and I cannot believe how fast he was coming down the road,” Leopold said. “We don’t have proper signage. We don’t have one sign on the street telling you what the speed limit is supposed to be.”

She shared how the traffic has caused her to question her safety on the street.

“I will not walk my dog on the street—I do not feel safe. We do need to do something that encourages people to slow down,” Leopold said.

Police Chief Bill Birkenhauer encouraged Leopold and other citizens to call the police station with concerns surrounding the speed of drivers.
