A tornado watch has been issued for Boone, Kenton and Campbell Counties until 3 a.m. Saturday. A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for northern Boone County until 8:45 P.M. Friday night.

Various kinds of severe weather are possible throughout much of the tri-state for Friday night and into Saturday morning. Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency for the commonwealth Friday afternoon.

“Severe storms can be expected this evening. All severe hazards are possible, including damaging winds in excess of 70 mph, very large hail and tornadoes, some of which could be strong,” according to a National Weather Service hazard warning issued on Friday. “In addition, locally heavy rain could result in flash flooding.”

The likelihood of storms is highest before 11 p.m. with winds possibly reaching up to 14 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. Chance of precipitation overnight is about 80% as of Friday evening. Overnight rainfall could reach between a tenth to a quarter of an inch. The weather is expected to clear up by Saturday morning.

“Once again we have a dangerous weather system sweeping across the commonwealth,” Gov. Beshear said in a press release. “We expect a significant round of weather coming this afternoon and into tonight that will produce strong winds that could lead to power outages, a possibility of hail, flooding and potential for tornadoes. We need everyone to be really careful and make sure you have weather alerts on and are at a location where you can seek safety if needed.”
