The Covington Police Department has confirmed to LINK nky that they are investigating Mason Goins, a social studies teacher at Holmes High School, who resigned earlier this week.
The investigation stems from inappropriate communications with a student, according to police. The police stated that no arrest has been made and could not share further details due to it being an open investigation involving minors.
District parents are already taking to social media to voice their frustration. One post shows a communication seemingly from Superintendent Alvin Garrison, in which he states the district is working with a national PR consultant, “who has advised us to revise some of our procedures to enhance transparency and communication.” It’s not clear from the posted correspondence if the PR consultation is directly related to this incident or a more routine consultation; the district has been consulting with PR professionals about how to communicate with the community for several years.
In a statement sent out to parents, a full transcript of which you can read here, Garrison and principal Ben Brown write, “we understand how concerning this news may be for our parents and community. We are cooperating with the authorities. The safety, care and well-being of our students are our top priorities, and we are committed to maintaining a secure and nurturing environment for all.”
The statement says that the district contacted both the police and the Kentucky Cabinet of Health and Family Services. The district is encouraging families who have questions about the incident to contact the principal by calling (859)655-9545, ext. 16209.
