Gun-owning Covington residents can now pick up a free cable gun lock thanks to a program aimed at reducing gun violence instituted by the Covington Human Rights Commission.
“Too many persons have fallen victim to being shot,” said Human Rights Commission Vice Chair Mike Steinman in a press release. “Ideally, the goal is to end gun violence and accidental shootings altogether, and as a start toward meeting this goal, gun locks will prove beneficial. Hopefully the public will take advantage of procuring these gun locks and the opportunity to protect our children and our neighbors.”
The locks work by running a cable through the action mechanism or barrel of a gun, which prevents rounds from being chambered or even loaded. The locks work on most handguns, rifles and shotguns.
“We look forward to getting these free gun locks in the hands of as many Covington gun owners as we can,” said Covington Police Public Information Officer Justin Bradbury. “If it saves even one life, it is worth it the effort.”
Covington residents can get a lock by going to Covington Police Headquarters, located at the intersection of 20th Street and Madison Avenue. Proof of residency is required. The police department asks residents to refrain from bringing their guns to the police station to ensure safety.
