Four candidates were vying for two open spots on the Beechwood Independent Board of Education, and Kyle Burns and Laura Wooten were the top vote getters, with 2,159 and 1,790 votes respectively.
The two open spots were occupied by Norine Sullivan and Melanie Stricker, neither of whom ran for reelection. The board is composed of five members, and seats are elected on a rotating basis, meaning the three remaining seats, currently occupied by Chair Jeanne Berger, Brad Hood and Amy Sleet, were not up for election this year.
School board members have little say in the day-to-day operations of the district. Instead, their role is to set overall district policies, including fiscal policies, approve contracts and engage with community. They’re also responsible for hiring and evaluating the superintendent. Board members serve four-year terms.
