Rumpke Waste & Recycling does not want to see a repeat of Independence Day fire-related incidents this Labor Day weekend.
“Independence Day celebrations produced a rash of container and truck fires, as well as a fire at our transfer station in Covington from fireworks, propane tanks and other flammable items placed in the trash,” said Jacob Moore Rumpke, district operations manager in a press release. “This is why it is important to make sure you are placing the correct items into the trash and recycling containers.”
Rumpke offers the following tips for cleaning up after your Labor Day and tailgating festivities:
- All spent fireworks, charcoal embers and ash must be soaked in water before disposal. Doing this ensures the material will not reignite.
- Do not put propane tanks in the trash or recycling containers. Instead, take empty containers back to stores to be refilled.
- Pool chemicals cannot be thrown in the trash or recycled. Contact your solid waste district for disposal options.
Additionally, Rumpke reminds customers that trash and recycling service will occur on schedule the week of Labor Day.
“It’s always good to place trash and recycling curbside the night before scheduled collection throughout the year, but this coming week, even more so because collection times could vary,” said Moore.
For those doing some last minute cleanup before holiday parties, Rumpke’s facilities will be open, but with reduced hours on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2:
- Covington Transfer Station (4399 Boron Ave. in Covington): 8 a.m. – Noon.
- Pendleton County Landfill (1374 Bryan Griffin Road. in Butler): 8 a.m. – Noon.
