A 34-year-old man who died in a car accident likely late Monday night in Walton has been identified as Walton resident Lance E. Mathews.
Boone County deputies received word of the accident around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning. The accident occurred on Dixie Highway near Logistics Boulevard in Walton. Upon arrival at the scene, Boone County Sheriff’s deputies found a 2003 blue Ford F-150 on the side of the road with Mathews trapped underneath. Walton Fire & EMS arrived afterwards and determined that Mathews had died at the scene.
“Through investigation it was discovered that Mathews was texting his girlfriend late Monday night and told her that he was ‘going on a drive,'” said the Boone County Sheriff’s Office in a press release. “Mathews was communicating via text message when their conversation abruptly ended near the scene of the accident at 11:46 p.m.”
The Boone County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Unit is handling the investigation.
“Alcohol and distracted driving are considered as contributing factors to the collision,” the press release stated.
