Alexandria voted to choose Pepper Construction as the contractor at risk for its new city campus.

Pepper Construction is a large commercial construction management company located in Cincinnati and has been doing work in the area for about 15 years, according to Pepper Construction Senior Vice President Jerry Noble.

Alexandria City Manager David Plummer said they went out for bids a few months ago and received six applicants, five of whom were interviewed.

“Pepper, for numerous reasons, shut down on top,” Plummer said. “We were really impressed with the amount of municipal work that they’re able to do. Their quality assurance efforts were pretty outstanding. I think commercially, just last, they did over $530 million worth of projects. So, they are a big company.”

They also have a .47 Experience Modification Rating, which Plummer said is an insurance way of saying they have few accidents and highlights safety.

“There were some very, very good presentations, very good companies,” Alexandria Mayor Andy Schabell said. “It’s tough. You know, sometimes you have four out of five that are just stupendous, and it’s a tough decision to make, but I think we made the right decision in the end, and I’m looking forward to working with you guys.”
