Boone County will be leasing a new fleet of gas-powered golf carts.

At the January meeting of the Boone County Fiscal Court, the board approved a resolution awarding the bid to lease new gas-powered carts for Boone County Golf Courses to Cunningham/Yamaha — a cart dealer based in Louisville.

Their current golf cart lease is set to expire next year after a one-year extension.

“There is noticeable wear on the fleet,” Deputy County Administrator Matt Dowling said during the meeting. “To get out in front of significant supply chain issues, as well as the amount of time we’ve been hearing from other golf courses that it’s taking to secure a new fleet, we wanted to procure this well in advance.”

Boone County issued a proposal for a four-year cart lease. Dowling said the pricing was “significantly higher” than what the county anticipated. Regardless, going with the four-year lease made the most financial sense, he said. The total cost came in at $212,297.12.

Russ Gartner, director of golf operations at Boone County Golf Courses, said the carts the county will be getting are quieter than their previous fleet.

“It is significantly quieter so the homeowners around the course will be pretty happy,” Gartner said.
