Two Park Hills priests, Rev. Shannon Collins and Rev. Sean Kopczynski, have been barred from ministry for refusing to recant their views on the Catholic liturgy, according to a recent letter from the Covington Diocese’s office that LINK nky has obtained.

Collins and Kopczynski were ministers at the Our Lady of Lourdes parish, located on Amsterdam Road in Park Hills. Both have openly rejected the the conventions of modern liturgical practices, and their church in Park Hills holds Mass in the traditional Latin.

Both men may still attend services, but they have been barred from performing officially accepted Catholic liturgical duties and other pastoral functions.

LINK nky has reached out to the Diocese for comment.

This is a developing story, and LINK nky will report more as information becomes available.

UPDATE: A previous version of this brief stated that the Vatican II council in the 1960s mandated the administration of Mass in the congregations’ local language. This is not, in the strictest sense, true, and the Diocese’s letter makes no mention of the Latin mass, so we have revised our brief to reflect what information is currently available. –LINK nky editorial, Jan. 18, 2024
