Florence Fire/EMS Department Firefighter/Paramedic Joe Marlow is being lauded for his work with students training to enter the paramedic field.

Marlow received the Gateway Community and Technical College Paramedic Education Program and St. Elizabeth Healthcare Field Preceptor of the Year award during the Florence City Council’s recent session.

The award is in recognition of aiding students as a preceptor, or instructor, officials said.

“Every year we have paramedic students coming into our program and send them out to ride with the ladies and gentlemen you see standing behind me,” St. Elizabeth Healthcare Heart and Vascular Institute System Director Mike Harris said during his presentation at the meeting. “Our paramedic students nominate people they think went above and beyond in providing them a perfect educational opportunity.”

There were 21 students that completed just over 8,000 hours of ride time on ambulances and saw nearly 2,000 patients, Harris said.

“They do a lot of work and we rely on these people behind me supporting our students in their endeavors becoming paramedics,” Harris said.
