The Covington Police Department is working with the Kentucky State Police to investigate an officer-involved shooting Sunday afternoon, according to the police department.

The shooting occurred in the 1900 block of Glenway Avenue, and police say there is no threat to the public.

At around 12:04 p.m., officers were sent to what police called a report of a suspicious person on Glenway Avenue. An officer located a suspect in the area, and according to a news release from the department, “during a violent struggle, the officer discharged his duty weapon.”

“Nothing like that happens around here,” said Mesha Richardson, who lives near where the shooting occurred.

The suspect was taken to UC Medical Center by ambulance. The Kentucky State Police were requested to conduct the investigation per department policy.

The involved officer was placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete, which is standard protocol.

“Really just sad in general that that happened,” said another neighbor, Angela Lathrop.

Residents with video footage of the incident are asked to contact the Covington police department at 859-292-2222.
