The Boone County Sheriff is investigating the death of a 38-year-old man who died after getting struck by a 2004 black Ford F-150 while bicycling southbound on Dixie Highway.

Simon Aguilar was cycling down Dixie Highway early in the morning on July 2 before the truck’s driver struck Aguilar, launching him from his bike. Deputies say they arrived at the scene around 5:30 a.m. and began performing first aid. Aguilar was later transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Florence, where he died from his injuries.

The driver appears to have stopped a short way down the road after hitting Aguilar before fleeing the scene on foot. The sheriff doesn’t believe speeding was a factor in the accident; however, the press release stated that the officers have reason to believe that the driver was likely intoxicated. Although the office has a suspect in mind, they did not release any details about the person’s identity, and no charges have been filed yet.
