Fifth grade teacher Akrivi Watson and kindergarten teacher Beth Fitzwater were honored as the monthly Break-the-Mold award recipients for the Boone County Schools at March’s Board of Education Meeting.

Watson began the North Pointe Elementary Panthers-With-A-Purpose student council group in 2007. The Hebron school serves pre-k through fifth grade students. Three years ago Beth Fitzwater joined her in leading the group of students who work hard to help their community, inside the school and through outside opportunities. They have cleaned out the teachers’ lounge and made blankets to distribute to area nursing homes, where they also read and sing to the residents.

While the students are learning many useful leadership skills, the two teachers spend a great deal of time raising funds in support of the program.

“Teaching kindness, building future leaders and instilling a service mentality,” is how Watson described their purpose. “It’s a privilege to watch them.”

Friends and co-workers cheered the teachers on at the award ceremony.
