If you are a fan of pickleball and live in Cold Spring, be prepared to be excited: Pickleball courts will be coming to the city very soon.

The city announced plans to construct up to six pickleball courts around the city at a recent council meeting. While bocce ball courts were also being considered, council ultimately decided to stick just with pickleball.

The courts will go in front of the detention basin, which is below the police parking lot. There is 10-foot fencing on two sides of it to protect any long balls that may get hit off the ball diamond.

The estimated price of building the courts is $350,000.

As pickleball gains popularity around the country, Cold Spring resident Chuck Douser recently found a love for the game.

“Actually, I played pickle ball down at the Y,” Douser said. “Indoor, they had three courts. I’m by far the oldest guy playing pickle ball. In two months, I’ll be 93. I’m looking forward to the courts, but I’d hate to see the council going into debt or having to borrow money to do so.”

Council said the aim is to get the plan out to bid by spring or early summer.
