The Campbell County Fiscal Court voted at their Dec. 7 meeting to adopt a new meeting schedule for 2023 through 2026.
The court voted to change the first meeting of the month from an evening meeting to a morning meeting, which will start at 9 a.m. The change is an effort to serve residents who may not be able to attend evening meetings.
The second monthly meeting will still be held at 5:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at the Newport Administration Building.
Campbell County resident Lisa Robinson attended the meeting to question the change.
Robinson, who lives in Grants Lick, said she thought the change was inconvenient for people living in the county’s southern end, adding that they already feel disadvantaged by the court.
She said that many people don’t attend meetings regularly, but when there is an agenda item of concern, they would have to take work off to attend. Â
Campbell County Commissioner Geoff Besecker said that the court holding two evening meetings disadvantaged residents who work second shift and people with kids who take care of homework and dinner in the evening. He said having a morning meeting would allow them to see reception in the community.
Campbell County Commissioner Brian Painter added that retired residents have busy afternoons and might prefer a morning meeting as well.
The court also noted that agenda items like ordinances take two readings to pass, so they will be read at the evening and morning meetings.
Though this is approved for a four-year term, the court ahs the power to pass a resolution to amend the schedule if it’s not working as designed.
