A man was shot and killed near the 15th Street Bridge in Covington on Thursday evening.

Covington Police responded to the first block (0-100) of West 15th at just before 9 p.m. after receiving a report of two shots fired.

Officers found a male on the scene, lying on the bridge suffering from at least one gunshot wound, a news release said.

The victim was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he died. He was later identified as Virgil Stewart, 60, of Covington. Police said in an update on Friday morning that investigators believe that Stewart was walking home from work on the 15th Street Bridge when he was approached by two others.

Witnesses, police said Friday, also reported hearing at least one gun shot and then seeing two people rifling through Stewart’s pockets before fleeing the scene.

Both were described as black males, one with shoulder-length dreadlocks and wearing gray and black-colored clothing. There was no further description of the second male.

Police said that “several items of evidence” were recovered from the scene, though the identity of the suspects is still not known.

Covington Police continue to investigate the scene. Anyone with information is asked to call the department’s criminal investigation bureau at 859-292-2234.
