What started as a potluck dinner has expanded to an annual event celebrating Boone County’s seniors.

Former Boone County Commissioner Irene Patrick is recognized as the founder of the Boone County Senior Picnic. Patrick used to host potluck dinners in her backyard for Boone County’s senior citizens, and from there the event has only expanded.

Now in its 35th year, tickets are on sale for the Boone County Senior Picnic, which is set for Wednesday, Sept. 14.

“Our annual Boone County senior citizens picnic is an event that I look forward to each and every year,” Judge/Executive Gary Moore said. “Our senior citizens have contributed so much to the betterment of our community and this is another way for us to say thank you. I am sure that Commissioner Irene Patrick would be elated at how this event has grown from her very first one in her backyard.”

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 14, at the Boone County Fairgrounds, located at 5819 Idlewild Road, in Burlington.

In addition to breakfast, lunch and snacks, vendor booths will be on-site for the senior picnic.

Anyone ages 55 and older that buys tickets on the first day they are available, Aug. 1, will also be entered to win a drawing for a $100 gift card.

Tickets are $6 each and are available for purchase at the Boone County Administration Building, the Florence Government Center, the Union City Building, the Boone County Senior Center, the Florence Senior Center, and the Walton Senior Center. Tickets will be available to pur from Aug. 1 to Aug. 29.

Executive Assistant Shona Schulkers said organizations interested in getting involved in the picnic should contact (859) 334-3571 by Friday, Aug. 26.
