Florence City Council recently approved a zoning map change to allow a new Carmax location to move in.

The used car sales business will be located on Holiday Place, across from the Florence Y’alls Stadium on Interstate 75. Part of the plan is to improve the road so that Carmax trucks have an easier time moving in and out of the property and onto 42. The ordinance change was unanimously approved during the council meeting on June 28.

The business also plans to widen Jameson Drive to accommodate the wide turns for its trucks. Both development plans brought praise from the Florence City Council at the ordinance’s first reading during a June caucus meeting. The new car business is expected to break ground in spring 2023.

During the meeting, a first reading was given for an ordinance to improve the digital sign for Turfway Park, which is under construction and due to open this fall.

A first reading was also given for an ordinance change allowing for the former Acapulco restaurant to be renovated for multiple businesses.

Both ordinances were brought to the planning and zoning committee on June 22.

Local hotel owner Subhash Patel spoke to the committee about remodeling the former restaurant on Turfway Road.

The 8,000 square-foot space suffered a fire in 2020 and has since permanently closed. Now, Patel wants to reimagine the site for two or possibly four tenants to complement his nearby hotels, meaning more eateries may be coming to that area to capitalize on the future Turfway crowds and his hotel guests.

The second reading of those ordinances will come on Tuesday, July 12.
