Empire Drive is next on the list for a new sidewalk in Boone County, but the path forward may face a few challenges.

Boone County Fiscal Court recently reviewed a proposal to hire Prime AE LLC to provide design services for the sidewalk project at Empire Drive and Empire Connector Drive. County Engineer Rob Franxman said some money was set aside last year for sidewalk renovations in the county-funded capital projects budget. Commissioner Cathy Flaig pointed out the proposal will add “1.7 miles” of sidewalk.

“The sidewalk will face a few challenges, being situated along a state route with some significant excavation and a railroad crossing and probably a few easements as well,” Franxman said.

Because of that, the team determined a consultant should be hired from the county’s approved list. Prime AE will survey the area, coordinate utilities and construction plans for $172,166.

The fiscal court unanimously approved the project (Commissioner Jesse Brewer absent, so the vote was 3-0). Prime AE has until spring 2023 to submit its plans, and construction will follow shortly after, Franxman said.

Judge/Executive Gary Moore said this is a “very needed” project due to high pedestrian traffic in the area and nearby TANK bus routes.
