Sharon MacKnight said she is running for Fort Thomas mayor because she wants city government to listen to residents, communicate openly, protect taxpayer dollars and involve the community in major decisions.

MacKnight is a lifelong Fort Thomas resident and first-time candidate. She said she has spent years attending and recording public meetings, reviewing city documents, submitting open records requests and helping residents understand local government.

Why you should care about who your city’s mayor is

MacKnight faces Andy Ellison in the Nov. 3 general election.

“Good leadership begins with listening, asking thoughtful questions, respecting different viewpoints, and remembering that elected officials work for the people they serve,” MacKnight said.

MacKnight said her experiences following city government have shown her that residents can have difficulty finding information, getting clear answers and having their concerns heard before decisions are made.

If elected, MacKnight said her first priority would be financial accountability and stronger oversight of the city’s financial controls. She said that includes proper accounting safeguards, accurate financial records and oversight of taxpayer dollars, payroll, benefits and retirement contributions.

MacKnight also wants to ensure local and state laws and required procedures are followed and provide training so city staff, elected officials and board members understand their responsibilities.

Other priorities include increasing transparency, improving access to city documents and involving residents in major decisions. MacKnight said she also wants to preserve Fort Thomas’ historic character, parks, green spaces and neighborhoods while supporting fiscally responsible growth.
