Ramona Malone said she is seeking reelection to the Newport Independent Schools Board of Education because of her connection to the district and belief that communication, collaboration and coordination are important to student success.
Malone has four children who graduated from Newport High School and five grandchildren currently attending Newport schools. She said those experiences have shown her that students have different educational needs.
Malone faces Sylvia Covington and Benjamin Middendorf in the Nov. 3 general election.
“I am passionate about paying it forward and contributing to work that impacts our future,” Malone said. “I believe deeply in the power of knowledge—the key that opens the door to opportunity.”
Malone said she has worked to remain visible throughout the district by attending school events and serving on committees including Partners for Change and Read Ready Newport. She said those efforts have helped her build relationships with school staff, families, students and city leaders.
If reelected, Malone said her first priority would be maintaining strong systems and processes at the board and district levels, including oversight of district operations.
Malone also identified financial stability as a priority. She pointed to the board’s decision to hire a financial consultant after federal funding ended and said she recommended greater scrutiny of district spending.
If reelected, Malone said she wants to strengthen the district’s finances enough to maintain competitive pay for teachers, administrators and staff while creating a work environment that helps Newport attract and retain educators.
