Democrat Jason Ellis is challenging Republican state Rep. T.J. Roberts for Kentucky’s 66th House District.

Ellis announced his candidacy in October 2025, centering his campaign on affordability, education, infrastructure and political decency.

In his campaign announcement, Ellis accused Roberts of focusing more on political posturing than developing legislation that would benefit his constituents.

On his campaign website, Ellis said he believes Republicans and Democrats share more common ground than the current polarized political climate might suggest. He identifies what he calls the “middle majority,” a broad coalition of Republicans and Democrats who reject the more extreme elements of both political parties, as a potentially dormant political coalition his campaign could activate.

Ellis describes himself as a Libertarian Democrat, saying on his campaign website that he supports individual rights such as free speech, privacy, and bodily autonomy, alongside more liberal positions such as improving public schools, expanding health care access, and strengthening worker protections.

“I believe people should have the freedom to live their lives as they choose, while also recognizing the government’s role in ensuring fairness and providing essential support,” Ellis said on his campaign website.

Ellis is a teacher by trade and has taught writing and rhetoric at community colleges in Cincinnati and Middletown, Ohio. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Northern Kentucky University in 2008 and 2011, respectively. He returned to NKU and earned a Master of Business Administration in 2024 before transitioning into a career in clinical research.

A Boone County resident, Ellis lives on a farm in Burlington with his wife and three children.
