Aaron Sutherland said he is seeking reelection to the Newport Board of Commissioners to continue focusing on public safety, infrastructure and development.

Sutherland said his past term has given him an opportunity to listen to residents, examine issues facing Newport and work toward solutions. He said he wants Newport to remain a place where families and businesses can thrive.

Sutherland faces Robbie Hall, Jacob Harrod, Ruth Johnson, Mike Radwanski, Ken Rechtin and Julie Smith-Morrow in the Nov. 3 general election.

“I believe elected officials have an obligation to listen, do their homework, ask difficult questions and be accountable for the decisions they make,” Sutherland said.

Sutherland is a lawyer and small-business owner and said those roles have given him experience examining complicated issues, considering competing interests and finding practical solutions.

If reelected, Sutherland said public safety will remain his top priority. He said that includes investing in infrastructure that makes the city safer and easier to navigate for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Sutherland said he also wants to support development that strengthens Newport’s neighborhoods while preserving the city’s character.

Another priority is Newport’s riverfront. Sutherland said he wants to continue protecting and improving areas including James Taylor Park, Festival Park, the Purple People Bridge and Riverfront Commons while making decisions about the city’s future.
