Although Election Day is still over a month out, the window to request a mail-in absentee ballot is now open. Early in-person voting will begin in October. So now is a good time to review your options for early voting or voting by mail in Northern Kentucky.

Before you can do any of that, however, you’ll need to register to vote or update your registration to your current address if you’ve moved since the last election. You can register to vote online using the state’s Online Voter Registration system here. Alternatively, you can register to vote by downloading a voter registration application here and mailing it to the appropriate county address listed below.

The deadline to register for the November general election is Monday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.

Mail-in absentee and in-person absentee

Absentee voting, whether in person or through the mail, is available to Kentucky residents who meet certain criteria, such as actively serving in the military, living away from your permanent address, or being medically infirm to the point that you can’t vote in person. As a result, you will often see the caveat “excuse required” in county announcements about casting an absentee ballot.

Visit the Kentucky Secretary of State’s dedicated webpage here to see if you’re eligible for an absentee ballot.

If you want to cast an absentee ballot, you’ll need to request one using the state’s online portal. The portal will open on Saturday, Sept. 19 and will remain open through Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Once you’ve filled out your absentee ballot, you can either mail it to the address provided in your ballot packet or drop it off at a county drop box by Election Day. Finally, you can also use your absentee ballot to vote in-person on designated days and times. Information about drop boxes and in-person absentee voting is below.

In-person early voting

Unlike absentee voting, any registered voter can vote early at designated locations in their respective counties. Early voting will take place from Thursday, Oct. 29 to Saturday, Oct. 31. Hours and locations for each county are listed below.
