Alexandria Mayor Andy Schabell announced during the Nov. 6 city council meeting that he will not be seeking reelection.

Schabell first won election in November 2018 and assumed office in 2019. He won his second term in November 2022.

“I truly have had the time of my life,” Schabell said. “These last seven years have been the best years of my life. I think that to go out with a bang instead of fade out or get chased out at some later point-I don’t want to do that. I am so happy with the way that the city works.”

Most of the region’s smaller cities choose to forego primaries altogether, regardless of the number of candidates, including Alexandria; therefore, the mayoral seat will appear on the November 2026 general election ballot.
