The following op-ed is written by William Fuller, a Republican candidate for Campbell Co. jailer

My reason for running for the Office of Campbell County Jailer is simple. I care about bringing overdue change to Campbell County Jail and the purpose the Jail is meant to serve the community.

I also hold the safety and overall welfare of Campbell County families close to my heart. Campbell County citizens deserve to have an efficient Jail where safety, security, and rehabilitation are top priority.

As a 5th generation resident of Campbell County, I’m thankful and blessed to call Campbell County my home and to raise my family here. My wife Sarah, our two young children and I live just south of Alexandria on a piece of land that has been in my family for over 100 years.

For over ten years, I have worked in corrections and in private security allowing me to gain considerable experience in working directly with incarcerated persons and civilians.

I possess the knowledge and experience to operate an efficient jail in all aspects including the booking process, intake procedures, inmate interactions, and the safe movement of inmates to and from court and other facilities.

Working in the private security sector, I developed the skills necessary to manage a large facility. As a certified trainer, I have readied over 100 security personnel with skills such as the proper use of professional impact weapons, pepper spray and use of force procedures. I have successfully developed others as a field training officer for new employees.

I am a better choice for the office of Jailer because, unlike the incumbent, I did not start at the top. I am more thoroughly qualified because of my day-to-day knowledge and experience. Because of these realities, I have a better understanding of the real issues and challenges facing the jail. I can create a safer environment for inmates and employees.

As your jailer, I will be passionate to fix current problems such as short staffing, employee retention, cleanliness of facility, under-trained staff, inability to safely house inmates to capacity, neglected programs designed to benefit the incarcerated with mental health or addiction history, and the lack of a re-entry program to provide inmates with the knowledge and tools to succeed upon release.

I will be responsible to the citizens of Campbell County, giving my full dedication and devotion to making the Campbell County Detention Center the best, in all categories, in the Commonwealth.

Thank you for your time and please consider voting William “Billy” Fuller for Campbell County Jailer in the May 17th Republican Primary.
