Abby Smith, an eighth grader at Beechwood Schools, was selected as the 2022 Outstanding Cadet by the Mary Ingles Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Daughters of the American Revolution ‘Outstanding Cadet’ Medal is awarded to a student cadet who distinguishes themselves through outstanding leadership, courage, honor, service, and patriotism in non-ROTC, military-affiliated cadet programs.

Smith joined the Northern Kentucky Young Marines unit in the spring of 2019. In addition to earning six promotions, she also graduated from the Young Marines Junior Leadership School in Maryland and Senior Leadership School in Georgia. Smith earned the Iron Molly award for the highest female Physical Fitness Test score at both.

Smith was selected as the youngest “17 Under 17” member from hundreds of applicants across the Greater-Cincinnati area. Smith has gone above and beyond in her volunteer service by organizing canned goods drives for local veterans, performing over 300 hours of community service, earning her the Gold PVSA Award, and earning an award from the DEA for teaching local school classes about the dangers of drugs.

Smith earned a Commendation of Merit for placing 1st in a division-wide knowledge challenge, placed 1st in the post-level VFW Patriot’s Pen essay contest in 2020 and 2021, received the Commander’s Award from the President & CEO of the Toys for Tots program, and helped the Northern Kentucky unit to earn the Distinguished Service Award from the Marine Corps League. In addition, she is a varsity member of the Beechwood High School golf and bowling teams, an Honor Roll student, and the 2022 Northern Kentucky Unit Young Marine of the Year.
