The Carnegie is launching an arts symposium featuring free-to-the-public arts events throughout the state, and the first event is coming up next month.
The series, called Altered States, will explore how “contemporary art is made, seen and contested in current fluctuating states of power,” according to a press release from the organizations. The first event is scheduled for Saturday, March 28 at The Carnegie from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
“The symposium series creates space not only for discussion, but for sustained exchange,” said Matt Distel, director of The Carnegie. “It allows artists, curators and audiences to wrestle with the most pressing questions facing contemporary art today, while grounding those conversations in local contexts.”
Three other symposium events will take place at other locations throughout Kentucky in 2026.
March’s event in Covington will feature keynote speeches from documentary filmmaker Theo Schear and artist Tunde Wey, who collaborated on a documentary series called Hard to Swallow, which “describes Wey’s career while examining the social structures that disenfranchise Black people globally,” according to a press release.
