The following is a poem written by Covington Classical Academy sophomore Bella Cornett, who submitted the poem to the 100th Annual Scholastic Writing Competition for teens and won a Silver Key award. The poem is reprinted here with permission from both Bella Cornett and Scholastic.
“Like most of my writing that I do, it kind of just comes to me,” Cornett said. “Like, I just sit down to write something, and, you know, it just happens. But while I was writing it, I was listening to a specific song that I think really influenced it… ‘Funeral’ by Phoebe Bridgers. And so I think that that kind of really guided my creative process with the piece.”
