Northern Kentucky folks are celebrating the holiday season around the region by decking their houses out Clark Griswold style.
Here are the cities around the area awarding residents for their decorating efforts:
Alexandria
As the holiday lights go up, the City of Alexandria will be taking nominations for this year’s winter/Christmas beautification award.
Nominations will be accepted Dec. 12-18 and can be submitted via the city’s Facebook page or by emailing Susan Vanlandingham at svanlandingham@alexandriaky.org.
The past five years’ winners will not be eligible:
- 2021: 146 Lake Park Drive, Brad and Julie Eglian
- 2020: 151 Lake Park Drive, Michael Eglian
- 2019: 32 Shaw Drive, Preston Hummel
- 2018: 1 Bittersweet Drive, Cellis Eaton
- 2017: 103 Quailwood Court, Tim and Angela Mullins
Elsmere
Light up Elsmere will take place from Dec. 16-18. Residents wishing to participate are asked to leave their lights on until 11 p.m. during those days to be judged by a selected committee.
Awards will be given to first, second, and third places, including an honorable mention.
Fort Thomas
Families are celebrating the holiday season in the Fort, and the city wants to see how they celebrate. The categories for this year’s holiday house decorating contest are:
- Clark Griswold: This category is for people who decorate over the top
- Hallmark Movie: For those whose house looks straight out of a Christmas movie
- Holiday Street: The street with the most participants
- People’s Choice: Residents get to decide which house or street deserves to be recognized. The city will post all the participating homes and streets on its Facebook page. The house/street with the most likes will take home this win.

Judging will take place on Dec. 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Highland Heights
Highland Heights is hosting its outdoor lighting contest on Dec. 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Participants should have their outdoor holiday lights turned on at 6:30 p.m. for a team of judges to walk through the city to award a contest winner.
Southgate
The city of Southgate is inviting all residents to light up their homes and participate in the Christmas home awards.
Participants should turn their lights on from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. starting Monday, Dec. 12, and send photos via email to aokura@southgateky.org with all contact information, including their name, address, unit/apartment number, phone number, and/or email for a chance to win a prize in one of the following categories:
- Classic Christmas: a look that reminds everyone of Christmas
- Toyland Christmas: a look that reminds everyone of a children’s Christmas
- Fantasyland Christmas: shows creativity and imagination
- Multi-family Home: a festive display for multi-family homes, apartments, and condos
The city must receive emails with photos and contact information before Thursday, Dec. 15, at 3:30 p.m.
Awards will be announced, and winners will be contacted on Saturday, Dec. 17. Prizes will be awarded at the Southgate Community Christmas Party on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Southgate Community Center.
Taylor Mill
The Taylor Mill holiday yard decorating contest is open, and residents can enter through Friday, Dec. 16, by calling (859) 581-3234 or emailing kwebb@taylormillky.gov.
Judging will take place on Sunday, Dec. 18, between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
First place will win a $100 gift card, second place a $50 gift card, and third place a $25 gift card.
Wilder
The city has selected a panel of judges to view homes and condos from Dec. 13 through Dec. 17. The city is asking residents interested in entering the contest to have their homes lit up during the allotted days. Residents are asked to call the city building at (859) 581-8884 with their nominations.
Prizes are as follows:
Single-Family Homes:
- First place will win a $75 gift card
- Second place will win a $50 gift card
- Third place will win a $25 gift card
Condominiums:
- First place will win a $75 gift card
Winners will be notified and asked which restaurant they would like their gift card for.
