As Americans get settled in with good food for the Fourth of July weekend, so too are the sharks at Newport Aquarium.
The sharks will get special meals for #SharkSummer courtesy of the biologists that work with them every day. Shark Summer runs all summer long and includes a chance to see shark eggs in the Shark Nursery, touch sharks and cross the world’s first Shark Bridge, a suspension bridge that crosses over the shark tank.
The sharks will have restaurant grade food specifically prepared and served for them. Each shark receives individual care in order to optimize their diet because the sharks have different dietary needs.
Newport Aquarium Senior Biologist Jen Hazeres says their rare shark rays, Sweet Pea, Scooter, and Sunshine have some of the most expensive tastes, including salmon and bonito fish. Each shark ray can eat about five kilograms of food every week.
“Their favorite food is lobster, which they get three days a week,” Hazeres said. “They have strong jaws and rounded teeth to crunch through shells. It’s safe to say they’re living the good life.”
Visitors can see shark feedings several times per week from Shark Ray Bay Theater, the Surrounded by Sharks Tunnel, Shark Central and other exhibits at the Newport Aquarium.
