Kenton County Parks & Recreation and Northern Kentucky Fly Fishers are presenting the Kids Fishing Derby for kids of all ages on Saturday, June 4 from 9 a.m. until noon at Middleton-Mills Park. It’s a free event.

Even adults won’t need fishing licenses when they are helping their kids because it’s the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources’ ‘Fish Free in Kentucky’ weekend.

Don’t worry if you have never fished before. KCP&R and NKFF will have everything for you and your child to enjoy a great day of fishing including spincast rods and reels, hooks, bobbers and bait.

Northern Kentucky Baseball Concessions will be open. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken tenders, snacks, soda, water and sports drinks are available.

At all other times, it’s acceptable to keep a catch from either of the ponds in Middleton-Mills Park. During the Kids Fishing Derby, however, KCP&R will be introducing kids to good conservation habits and sportsmanship and will be practicing catch and release, when they ask everyone to throw the fish back into the water.

There will also be prizes awarded for the ‘Big Fish of Each Species’ contest. Species categories will be bass, sunfish, catfish and carp. Door prizes will be given out to lucky participants throughout the event.

KCP&R will need fishermen and fisherwomen to help youngsters who may need it. Come on out to Middleton-Mills Park, share your experience, and help teach kids the fun of fishing.

Middleton-Mills Park is located at 3415 Mills Rd., Covington.
