Christ Hospital welcomes Mark Berlacher to expanding Northern Kentucky clinical practice

MarkĀ Berlacher, MD

The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute (TCHHVI) is excited to announce the addition of Mark Berlacher, MD, Cardiologist and Preventive Cardiology Specialist, to their outstanding group of highly trained physicians.

In addition to working as a cardiologist and cardiac imaging specialist, Dr. Berlacher is passionate about preventive cardiology, which includes addressing risk factors and pursuing a program of heart health—equally important for men, women, young individuals, and older adults.

ā€œI am particularly delighted that Dr. Berlacher is joining our growing team of world-renowned cardiologists,ā€ said Dean Kereiakes, MD, President, The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute. ā€œHe’s a highly skilled physician and cardiac imaging specialist whose focus on preventive cardiology will no doubt improve lives.ā€

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of Americans, and individuals increasingly want to understand their cardiovascular health and counteract any risks for heart disease and heart failure. On average, close to 30% of cardiology visits now center around a patient’s desire to consider healthy heart options.

ā€œOne of the most wonderful aspects of preventive cardiology is that almost everyone can benefit,ā€ said Dr. Berlacher. ā€œWhether you have a strong family history of cardiac disease and want to minimize your risk, or you don’t have any known risk factors but want to talk about lifestyle adjustments to keep your heart healthy, there are many ways we can help.ā€

Dr. Berlacher, a member of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology (ASPC), said he reviews a patient’s history, lifestyle, diet and exercise, considers the individual’s capacity for changes in terms of their life schedule and responsibilities, and then helps them get started in a way that makes sense to them. ā€œThe seemingly small day-to-day choices we make can have a significant impact on our cardiovascular health.ā€

Joel B. Forman, MD, Cardiologist, Preventive Care at The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute, explained that if a patient is at risk for heart disease, or has existing heart disease, the Institute’s preventive cardiologists are available to discuss how to reduce that risk and improve their quality of life. ā€œPatients do not have to accept heart disease as their heredity. They do have options.ā€

Raised in Toledo, Dr. Berlacher completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and obtained an MD in his hometown at the University of Toledo College of Medicine. His internal medicine residency was at Indiana University, where he served as chief resident. Following his residency, he completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, where he received the Jo Ann McWhorter Award for a graduating cardiology fellow.
