Covington performed a first reading of a special (temporary) ordinance this week that would allow for early morning alcohol sales on Sunday, Nov. 8.

It’s the date a football game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Atlanta Falcons is set to take place in Madrid, Spain. City Solicitor Frank Schultz said the ordinance came about after some local businesses had “requested the ability to invite patrons to start the festivities a bit earlier than normal.” The game’s kickoff is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Covington time.

“It would allow them (businesses with licenses) to sell alcohol by the drink starting at 6 a.m.,” Schultz continued. “It would automatically terminate at 9 a.m. and then the normal Sunday liquor license would take over.”

Typically, Sunday alcohol permits in Covington don’t allow sales until 9 a.m., according to established ordinance. If passed, the special ordinance would not extend past Nov. 8.

The Covington Board of Commissioners performed a special first reading of the temporary ordinance at their meeting on Tuesday. The ordinance did not appear on the agenda but was walked on by the city’s legal department. The commissioners will cast a final vote to either allow or disallow the temporary ordinance at their legislative meeting next week.

“We encourage the public to go on the website and read about the ordinance,” said Mayor Ron Washington. “And if they have some concerns, please reach out to your elected officials.”
