This historic Sims Furniture sign is getting a facelift with help from the City of Covington.

Covington has granted $7,500 to the Northern Kentucky Port Authority to aid in the refurbishing of the historic sign at the building set to house the entrepreneurial incubator SparkHaus.

The incubator is located on Madison Avenue on the site of the old Sims Furniture building. The sign will be updated to reflect the SparkHaus’ branding.

“Madison & 8th has such a rich history in our community – from its roots as the Covington Industrial Club to its time as the Montgomery Ward Department Store,” said Kenton County Judge/Executive Kris Knochelmann in a press release. “Preserving the historic character of this building while positioning it for what’s next was a priority for our team. This sign is a good example of how SparkHaus’ past will help ignite its future.”

The building was originally constructed in 1929, with the sign being added sometime in the 1950s. Klusty Sign Associates and Neonworks, a department of the American Sign Museum, will complete the work. Covington-based agency Durham Studio came up with the sign’s updated design.

“I look forward to seeing the neon sign shining down upon Madison Avenue,” said Covington Mayor Ron Washington.

SparkHaus is set to open in September.
