Attorney General Daniel Cameron is running for governor. The Republican AG filed the fundraising paperwork Wednesday with the Kentucky Registry for Election Finance, indicating he would run for the state’s top office.

“I’ve decided to run for Governor because Kentucky needs a leader who reflects the values of the men, women, and children of all 120 counties,” Cameron said in a statement. “That’s not our current Governor.”

Two other candidates have officially announced their candidacy for the position. Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles and State Auditor Mike Harmon have officially announced their candidacy, while a few other candidates said they are considering, including Northern Kentucky Rep. Savannah Maddox (R-Dry Ridge).

State Senators Max Wise and Ralph Alvarado and United Nations Ambassador Kelly Craft have also expressed their potential interest.

In light of the announcement, Secretary of State Michael Adams said he would consider a run for attorney general in a Twitter post.

Kentucky Democratic Party Chair Colmon Elridge released a statement on Beshear’s record and how it compares to Cameron’s.

“Andy Beshear is one of the most popular governors in the country because he works for Kentuckians, with strong leadership that is taking Kentucky from difficult years of a pandemic and devastating storms into record-breaking economic development that is creating more opportunities for our families,” Elridge said. “His record is a clear contrast with Daniel Cameron, with Kentuckians less safe from predators under his failed and highly politicized term as AG. With Daniel Cameron’s weak record of protecting Kentucky children, seniors, and survivors and him politicizing his office, Kentucky voters will have a clear choice next November if he emerges from the messy Republican primary.”
