Someone suspected in a recent murder was shot and killed in Covington by a Cincinnati Police officer on Monday morning, our content-sharing partner WCPO reported citing sources.

The Kentucky State Police, which is investigating because the shooting involved an officer, said the person was transported to St. Elizabeth, where he was pronounced dead.

Interim Cincinnati Police Chief Theresa Theetge said that the Cincinnati department responded to the area of 18th and Garrard streets in Covington due to police activity but did not elaborate on what that activity was, WCPO reported.

Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police President Dan Hils confirmed that a Cincinnati officer was involved in the shooting.

“Today, members of CPD’s fugitive apprehension squad were looking for information about a convicted felon wanted for murder in Hamilton County,” Hils said in a statement. “CPD officers, in full cooperation with the Covington Police Department, went to a family member of the suspect’s home simply to ask questions about where the suspect might be hiding.”

Hils said that when officers approached the house, the suspect — who they didn’t know was in the home at the time — came out the back door and ran at officers with a loaded revolver in his hand.

“The suspect ignored orders to drop the gun and continued running at officers who were forced to defend the obvious threat to their lives,” the statement continued.

The Kentucky State Police arrived on the scene at around 11:30 a.m. but did not offer further details, instead directing media to the state office in Frankfort.

A release issued Monday afternoon said that KSP’s Critical Response Team responded to the scene and that the investigation is ongoing.
