This has not been a normal winter. Temperatures have been well below the normal average, snow falls are approaching all-time levels and Fort Thomas Independent Schools have cancelled more school days this year than a normal 10-year period.
The irregular colder temperatures and precipitation has led to the need for the City of Fort Thomas to order more salt to treat the roadways. But according to City Manager, Don Martin, the city was able to save money on the additional order by having pre-order contracts in place.
“Because the city contracted early for salt
we’re paying about $76.00 per ton,” said Martin. “I’ve read reports where cities who are
not under contract are paying above $200 per ton. The ability to pre-plan
via supplier contract helps keep our annual salt costs lower than if we purchased
salt on an as-needed basis.”
The city currently has about 100 tons of salt
remaining. A typical snow event of about 2 inches required approximately
30 tons of salt. Taking all that into consideration Fort Thomas has enough salt on hand, before the additional order, for 3 snowfalls.
The City of Cincinnati has used 400,000 tons of salt since the beginning of the year, which is amount they typically use for the entire calendar year.
Stay strong, Fort Thomas. There’s a heat wave expected next week. Highs for next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday? 46, 45 and 48.
