The City of Florence, in partnership with Florence Christian Church, invites the community to participate in The Witness Tree, a solemn 11 day observance honoring veterans and raising awareness of the mental health challenges faced by those who have served our nation.
The Witness Tree will take place daily at 8:00 a.m. from November 1–11, 2026, at the Boone County Veterans Memorial on the campus of the Florence Government Center, 8100 Ewing Boulevard.
Each morning, community members will gather for an approximately 15 minute ceremony featuring readings, reflections and the placement of 22 dog tags on the Witness Tree, representing the estimated 22 veterans lost to suicide each day.
Over the course of the 11 day observance, 242 dog tags will be placed on the tree. By Veterans Day, the tags will serve as a powerful visual reminder of the lives lost, the sacrifices made by our veterans and the importance of supporting those who continue to carry the invisible wounds of service.
The Witness Tree provides an opportunity for the community to pause, remember and stand together in support of veterans and their families while helping bring greater awareness to veteran mental health and suicide prevention.
Veterans, families and community members are encouraged to attend any or all of the daily ceremonies and participate in placing dog tags on the tree in remembrance of those who have served and sacrificed.
