FRANKFORT, Ky (July 27, 2026) — The following is a statement from Senate President Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, regarding his potential run for Kentucky’s next governor in 2027.
“I am deeply grateful for the encouragement and confidence so many Kentuckians have shown by asking me to consider running for governor in 2027. After thoughtful discussions with my family, friends and trusted advisors, I have decided that my calling remains where it has always been, as the senator from Clay County, proudly representing the people of Kentucky’s 25th Senate District
“For me, public service has never been about seeking another title. It has been about advancing sound public policy that improves lives, strengthens our economy and leaves Kentucky better for it. That has been my mission throughout my legislative time, and it remains both my passion and my privilege.
“I am hopeful my colleagues will entrust me with another term as Senate president so we can continue building on the conservative policies that have transformed Kentucky into one of the nation’s strongest fiscal and economic success stories. Together, we have lowered taxes, balanced budgets, stabilized pensions, strengthened our budget reserve trust fund, invested in education and infrastructure, and positioned the commonwealth for long-term growth.
“I look forward to working with Kentucky’s next governor—one who views the General Assembly as an equal branch of government and a true governing partner. Kentucky deserves leadership that chooses collaboration over confrontation and solutions over political theater. Our residents are best served when leaders focus on results instead of creating conflict.
“The work of moving Kentucky forward is far from finished, and I remain committed to doing that work in the Kentucky Senate.”

Lawmakers returned to Frankfort in June to start the 2026 Interim. During this period, committees will meet to study policy issues, review implementation of recently passed legislation and begin evaluating proposals for the 2027 30-day session, which begins Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2027.

Sen. Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, represents the 25th Senate District, including Clay, Jackson, Knox, McCreary, Owsley, and Whitley Counties. Stivers has served as Kentucky Senate president for over a decade. He first assumed the position in 2013, succeeding former Senate President David Williams. As the Senate President, he is co-chair of the Legislative Research Commission. Stivers is also a member of the Interim Joint Committee on Judiciary.
