In 2025, the Petersburg Historical Society began preservation work on The Schramm’s Tavern—also known as Jonathan Carlton House. This remarkable property’s original structure was built in 1810 and an addition was added in 1825. Over its long history, this building has served the community in many ways. For more than 40 years it operated as a tavern and inn. It was once owned by a bounty hunter prior to the Civil War, later became a tea house, and eventually housed a beloved local restaurant known for its Saturday night fried chicken dinners prepared in the outdoor kitchen.
Preserving a building of this age and significance required extensive work. Thanks to generous donations and countless volunteer hours, the property now has a new roof, restored chimneys, updated electrical and HVAC systems, city water, renovated bathrooms, and many other improvements.
We invite you to come and see the beautiful restoration of this lovely historic home!
