Bishop Brossart and Holy Cross are on to the quarterfinals in Owensboro at the All “A” state tournament.
The Lady ‘Stangs improved to 19-1 with a 56-49 victory over Green County in the morning and into the afternoon while Holy Cross jumped to 15-2 with a 60-20 victory over Kentucky Country Day late in the evening in the last game played of the day at 9:30 p.m. CST.
Bishop Brossart 56, Green County 49
Trailing 40-39 going into the fourth, Bishop Brossart outscored Green County 17-9 in the final frame to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals against Danville Christian at 10 a.m. CST.
Kylie Smith led the charge with 16 points followed by Lilee Meyers with 11 points. Hadley Eviston and Rachel Shewmaker chipped in nine points, Greylee Kramer with eight.
Green County, champions out of the 5th Region who made it here by defeating last year’s All “A” runner-up Bethlehem, certainly didn’t make things easy. They outrebounded Brossart 34-24 and held a seven-point lead late into the third.
Brossart can point to its defense for climbing back in this one, forcing 28 turnovers in the contest and scoring 31 points off of them. Kylie Smith was the biggest beneficiary of the Green County turnover problems with nine steals.
Holy Cross 60, Kentucky Country Day 20
Holy Cross led wire-to-wire in this one, holding KCD to just seven made field goals and forcing 37 turnovers in the victory.
Avery Sturgeon led the way for the Lady Indians with 20 points, connecting on five 3-pointers. Riley Eberhard added 11 points while Jai Johnson and Alyssa Arlinghaus combined for 13 assists. Eleven Holy Cross players scored in the contest as they advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals to face Lyon County.
The Lady Indians are looking to become the first program with four All “A” state titles.
